Spark is an orientation week of service for incoming residential first-year students. Students spend time engaging in reflective service experiences and getting to know New Orleans. Spark ends when Wolfpack Welcome begins.
This year, 19 students participated, logging over 313 hours of service to New Orleans through the environmental action agency Green Light New Orleans. Sparkers built 3 backyard vegetable gardens and furnished approximately 40 homes in Orleans Parish with energy-efficient light bulbs. Participants also went through a 3-part seminar on charity and justice offered by Rev. Fred Kammer, SJ of the Jesuit Social Research Institute. All Spark 2012 students live together in community and will be offered ongoing service and advocacy opportunities throughout the year.
