Jesuit Priest Killed in Syria

Jesuit Martyr in Syria

Tue, 04/08/2014

Father Frans Van der Lugt S.J. was abducted on Monday, April 7, 2014 by masked gunmen from the Jesuit residence at Homs, in Syria, where he used to live, and was executed by gun shots.

Fr. Frans was born in the Netherlands in 1938, entered the Society of Jesus in 1958 and was ordained a priest in 1971.   He worked in Syria since 1960.

Despite the dangers, he had voluntarily decided to remain in the city of Homs in solidarity with the people who could not leave the city.

We pray for the repose of the soul of the new Jesuit martyr and for all of those men and women who have died in Syria.  We pray for peace in Syria.
