Saint Teresa of Avila – also known as Teresa of Jesus, was born in Avila, Spain on March 28,1515. This Saturday marks the 500th anniversary or Fifth Centenary of her birth.

She was a prominent Carmelite nun in Spain, who wrote profoundly on Christian life. Her books are regarded as key texts of Spanish Renaissance literature including her autobiography The Book of Her Life, The Interior Castle and The Way of Perfection.
During the Counter Reformation, she was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered one of the founders of the Discalced or Teresian Carmelites.
