Celebration of Jesuit Heritage

The Jesuit Center and the Student Government Association are sponsoring a series of events, activities and exhibits, designated Loyola Week, to celebrate the Jesuit heritage of Loyola University New Orleans. Loyola Week will be held Sunday, November 1, through Saturday, November 7.

Loyola Week was established as a week for the larger Loyola community to rediscover and explore the Jesuit heritage of the university, its history, its founders, its identity as a Jesuit institution and its mission as a Jesuit educational institution whose principles are based on the over 450-year-old teachings of Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits.

Sunday, November 1

Outdoor Mass: Celebrating our Jesuit Identity
9:00 p.m, on Marquette Lawn
Wear maroon and gold attire to this outdoor service to celebrate our Jesuit history.

Monday, November 2

Outdoor Movie: The Exorcist
8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m., Res Quad
Come to the res quad to watch a poky film so we exorcise the Devil out of our campus Identify the Jesuit connection! Popcorn and refreshments will be provided.

Tuesday, November 3

‘Katrina’s Internally Displaced People:
The Status and the Stories’: A Panel Discussion

12:40 p.m. – 1:50 p.m., St. Charles Room
Panelists include Allison Plyer (Greater New Orleans Community Data Center), Liz McCarthy (St. Bernard Project), and students/faculty who have been displaced by Katrina. Sponsored by the Jesuit Social Research Institute (JSRI).

‘Migration in the South’:
Lecture by Dr. Manuel Vasquez, Professor of Religion at University of Florida.

7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., St. Charles Room
Migration trends in the Deep South, including shifting of migrant situations, tensions in new destinations, and role of religion. Sponsored by Jesuit Social Research Institute (JSRI).

Wednesday, November 4

Dress it up: Dinner with the Jesuits
5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Orleans Room
A classy event for students, faculty, staff and Jesuits to get to know each other over a nice meal.
Co-sponsored by Loyola Dining Services and University Programming Board.

Thursday, November 5

Jesuits at Work:
The Blending of Jesuit Callings and Professions

12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., Audubon Room
Panel discussion of Jesuits Jerry Fagin, S.J., Steve Sauer, S.J., Tom Greene, S.J. explaining the path that led to their vocations and careers. Light lunch will be provided.
Sponsored by the Career Development Center.

The Battle of Pamplona: Capture the Flag Tournament
5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., Residential Quad
Get your teams of 12 people! $600 worth of prize money!

Friday, November 6

Carnivale: Interfaith/Intercultural Bazaar!
3:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., Peace Quad
Join us for fun times and new cultures! Music, food and drink. From 3:30-5:30- Free admission! Co-sponsored by UPB, MSA, ISA, LASO, inBUS, and The Maroon Platoon.

A Christmas Carol: From the Novel by Charles Dickens, adapted for the Stage by Neil Bartlett
7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m., Marquette Theater
A modern rendition of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” including Jesuit values. $12 General Admission; $8 All students, seniors and Loyola Faculty/Staff. Sponsored by the Theater Department.

Saturday, November 7

Wolves on the Prowl
8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Loyola University New Orleans
A service day involving the entire Loyola community. Pre-register online to select your project and get a free t-shirt. Sponsored by the Alumni Association
