Short Bio
George is a native of Opelousas, LA, an area known for Zydeco music and sumptuous Cajun cuisine. (It is the childhood home of Clifton Chenier, Paul Prudhomme and Tony Cachere!) Although a “country boy” at heart, George has made New Orleans his home for more than 20 years. Before joining University Ministry in 2001, George worked for various medical facilities and social service agencies in the city, including Catholic Charities and Covenant House.
“Brother George” has been active with numerous groups in the city that address interfaith and diversity issues. He has served on Mayor Nagin’s Human Relations Commission, as well as with the Jeremiah Group. Currently, he is involved with the Interfaith Worker Justice movement, the New Orleans Healing Center, Atlas Interfaith Foundation, the Interfaith Communications Alliance, and the inter-collegiate Martin Luther King, Jr. Week for Peace Committee. George has served in many capacities at the university as well, including as a Resident Chaplain in Biever Hall for seven years, and as an advisor for several student organizations (currently Genesis Gospel Choir, Bridging the Gap, Chi Alpha, and Big Brothers Big Sisters). His weekly Hour of Power ministry has been a Loyola tradition for fifteen years.
George has been married to his wife, Laura, for ten years, and has two adorable sons that can be seen coloring in the back of Ignatius Chapel on Sunday mornings. You can find him periodically lugging big pots of home-cooked fried chicken and red beans around campus for special events, but the rest of the time his door in Mercy Hall is open for you!
